On Wednesday, July 26, 2000, the Ferndale Diversity Coalition hosted
an "Unpacking White Privilege" workshop for the community of Ferndale.
The workshop was led by; Lisa Fox, chair of WHRTF; Jonn Lundsford,
past president of the Northwest Coalition for Human Dignity (NWCHD);
and Vernon Damani Johnson, current president of NWCHD and WHRTF co-founder
and board member.
The meeting, which was held in the Ferndale City Hall Annex, was attended
by a truly diverse group, including representation from Ferndale City
Council, Ferndale School Board, PFLAG, Lummi nation, and families
and youth from the community. Ferndale Youth were well represented,
and were very articulate in their convictions.
Unpacking White Privilege is a significant step in fighting racism,
and the FDC was applauded for their perserverence. Participants agreed
that future workshops should be held around Whatcom County in the
near future.
