March 2007
Dear Friend of Diversity:

As Spring and Summer approach and everything is growing we are returning to our roots and asking for one of the items that nourishes our existence! We are asking you to renew your membership, or to become a member of the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force. As a grassroots group, we remain committed to protecting and promoting Human Rights in Whatcom County, and your annual dues and donations form the foundation of our budget.

WHRTF is an all volunteer organization.
Our members volunteer their time, creativity and support to:
  - work with schools, community organizations and law enforcement officials to monitor human rights issues and advocate on victims’ behalf.
  - staff the office and respond to phone and email queries.
  - plan and implement our annual Human Rights conference on Dr. Martin Luther King weekend, which is open and free to all. We have been able to provide clock hours for teachers for the past four years.
  - organize our Annual Human Rights Awards Celebration to recognize the work of individuals and groups in support of Human Rights in the community.
  - support the annual Human Rights Film Festival.
  - provide workshops working against racism for organizations in our community.
work with a number of organizations to monitor the activities of the “minutemen” who are creating concern for many citizens of Whatcom county.
  - started a series called Connecting the Dots where we host speakers who are coming to our community inform and educate us of the effects of globalization and trade agreements on their comunities. We are questioning why almost on half of all the people on the planet live on less than two dollars a day.

It takes monetary resources to maintain our office, our Human Rights hotline and our website; to present annual community events such as the MLK Conference and the Human Rights Awards; and to produce and distribute newsletters, educational materials and informational fliers. We also have additional costs for licenses, permits and insurances we are required to maintain—costs that are growing every year.

Communities everywhere need organizations like the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force to defend the rights of individuals and groups who are marginalized, and to be watchful for the erosion of Human Rights. Please assist us in our collective pursuit of educating our community toward acceptance and celebration of our growing diversity. Your financial contribution means the world to us, and it plays an integral part in our success.

Thank you,
Barbara Zine Rofkar
Chair

Please help us continue.
The work of safeguarding human rights is never done.
