It's happening again, on almost the same date.

Dear Editor,

Once again the graduating high school seniors are receiving letters from the National Socialist Vanguard out of The Dalles in Oregon. The Nationalist Socialist Vanguard is a White Supremacist group intent on recruiting those young people who might be confused, having no direction and with the need to convince themselves they do have some power in the world. It is a militaristic group that is anti-semitic, racist, anti-government expressing its own individual powerlessness through group violent thought and action. It's fashioned on the nazi ethic.

If your high school seniors receive these letters, please call or write the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force. We have forms from the US Postal Service you can send back to the sender with the letter. Please keep a copy of the original for the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force for our files.

If you wish not to get involved this way but think this a serious intrusion into your family's life, please at least call us so we can get a count on what the county is receiving this year.

NEO-NAZI LITERATURE TARGETS WHATCOM COUNTY YOUTH

Whatcom County ~ For the third time in four years, high-school students in Whatcom County have been the target of racist, anti-Semitic hate literature. At least 50 students at Lynden High School and Lynden Christian High School have received mailings from the National Socialist Vanguard, a White-Supremacist organization based in The Dalles, Oregon. The literature, sent to randomly chosen students, is an attempt to introduce the community’s youth to Nazism and an admiration of Hitler. Similar mailings in 1998 and 1999 targeted students at Bellingham high schools.

The Whatcom Human Rights Task Force condemns this Neo-Nazi literature. The anti-Jewish and racist material is morally offensive and promotes hate in our community. We are particularly concerned that young people are being assailed by those who wish to spread bigotry and racism.

WHRTF highly commends the response of the Lynden community. Schools, churches, law enforcement, parents, the Lynden Tribune, and postal workers have all been proactive in educating the community and responding to student concerns. We extend our support to the students targeted by the mailings, and urge the community to continue joining hands against hate.
