NOMINATIONS FOR WHRTF HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS
Now through April 14th
Awards Ceremony scheduled for May 22nd

The Whatcom Human Rights Task Force is seeking nominations for the 2003 Human Rights Awards which will be presented May 22 at the 7th Annual Human Rights Awards Banquet.

Deadline for nominations is April 14.

A nomination should include the nominator's name and contact information, as well as a short description of why the nominated individual or group is exemplary in their service to human rights. Special consideration will be given to nominees who are longtime grassroots activists for peace, justice, and human rights, and who have worked for diverse human rights issues such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and political beliefs.

The WHRTF has presented annual human rights awards for seven years. Past recipients include Joy Keenan, Larry Estrada, Cynthia Zaferatos, the Boys & Girls Club of Ferndale, Henry Cagey, Don Pierce, plus many others. Recipients names are displayed at Big Rock Garden in Bellingham.

Join us at the Pickford Cinema for 7 days of film presented by Whatcom Film Association. Movies about significant human rights issues throughout the world. Each evening there will be a guest speaker at 8:00 pm in the iDiOM Theater, behind the Pickford Cinema. The speakers' presentations are free and open to the public.

ADMISSION COST: $5.00 ($4.50 for WFA members) and a Festival Pass is available at the Community Food Co-op and the Pickford Cinema for $30 for seven screenings.

Participants will learn strategies for resolving controversial issues among diverse groups, using a process that assists groups to move from polarization to common ground. Participants will also learn a practical model for identifying the key issues in a conflict situation. Participants will become adept at focusing on the essential issues when divergent opinions obscure
clear thinking.

2nd Annual Community - Based Solutions for Environmental Health & Justice Conference

The 1 day conference features grassroots indigenous peoples and people of color organizers who are addressing issues of environmental racism and economic justice. Come listen to some of the most dynamic and engaging organizers and activist.

Keynote Speaker:
Mililani Trask (Hawai’ian) is an indigenous Hawaiian attorney. She was elected Kia’aina for Ka Lahui Hawai’i (Governor for the Nations of Hawai’i). She was recently appointed as the Pacific Basin representative on the newly established 16-member United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Mililani is an inspirational and strong advocate for indigenous rights.

Heart and Hands Awards

We all know someone in our lives who goes the extra mile for others. Volunteers of all ages make this community a special place just by lending a hand.

All of those nominated for the Heart and Hands Awards will be honored at an ice cream social for volunteers, their families and friends at Bellingham High School. Eight nominees will be selected for $250 awards to be given to the nonprofit of their choice.

Whatcom Volunteer Center wants your help in thanking and recognizing them at its annual Heart and Hands Awards event. It’s a great way to say thanks.

The Second Annual May Day Community Potluck Dinner
"Breaking Bread and Building Bridges"

"Breaking Bread and Building Bridges" is presented by the Lummi Nation and the Ferndale Diversity Coalition at the Wex li em Community Center on the Lummi Reservation

Please bring a favorite main dish, salad, or dessert to share. Beverages and dinnerware will be provided. We will be enjoying food, friendship, cultural sharing and games together!

This event will include a variety of performers- representing the Coast Salish tradition as well as latino dancers, Scottish country dancers, hip-hop, a violin performance and an eagle from Sardis Wildlife Center. Jewell James will be carving in preparation for the second Healing Pole. Be sure to let your friends and students know about this enriching opportunity!
