AAUW classism discussion with speaker, Rouha Rose
February 8 - Saturday -10am to noon

The Bellingham Branch of the American Association of University Women sponsor guest speaker Rouha Rose with a discussion of classism. Ms. Rose is AAUW WA State Diversity Chair.

She states, "Classism is an obsolete status system that keeps many individuals from achieving their full potential. In a nation that is struggling to learn how to educate every child to his full potential and which needs every contribution to human well being, classism is illogical and counterproductive. In economics, class is a matter of money but in societies, it is divisive in every facet of everyday life. We can rid ourselves and our world of this costly and barbaric prejudice."

Mrs. Rose holds degrees in sociology and social work and is the third generation of her family to be involved in human rights work, as are her children and grandchildren.
The public is invited. There is no charge.

JOINING WORLDS FilmSeries
Thursday, February 27, 7-9pm

Join us at the Fireplace Room of the Bellingham Public Library for a free film and a discussion. The film is John Sayles' Passion Fish. The film is about the love/hate relationship between an injured white woman and the black woman who is taking care of her. John Sayles is often complimented on how well he explores difficult social situations.

This film is the story of an arrogant, self-centered, strong willed white actress (Mary McDonald) paralyzed in a car crash, the equally strong-willed black woman hired to care for her (Alfre Woodard) and the love/hate relationship that develops between them as they're stuck with one another in rural Louisiana.

Whatcom Human Rights Task Force presents Passion Fish as part of our monthly film and discussion series, Joining Worlds. This is an opportunity for our community to take in groundbreaking documentary and fiction films, and share in a lively discussion. Films in this series address racism and television, African-American history, the theft and appropriation of Native American culture, as well as other important topics relevant to this region. The theme, "Joining Worlds", directly addresses our desire to explore the interconnections among different forms of oppression, and recognize our places in history.
