2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the World Summit on Sustainable
Development met to assess global change since the historic United
Nations Conference on Environment and Development of 1992 in Rio.
Gathered were world governments, concerned citizens, UN agencies,
and multilateral financial institutions.
Emma participated in the World Summit and will address the issues
raised at the Summit.

"JOINING
WORLDS" FILM SERIES in October

"Ruby Bridges"
The
true story of an African American girl who, in 1960 at age 6, helped
to integrate all the white schools of New Orleans. Although she
was the only black girl to come to the school she was sent to, and
though she faced a crowd of angry white citizens everyday, she emerged
unscathed, physically or emotionally.
SPEAKER:
J.T. Stewart, educator at Seattle Community College and Fairhaven
College, will be the speaker for this event. She is co-editor of
Gathering Ground: New writing and Art for Northwest Woman of
Color and the Ark. Her work has been featured on NPR, UWs
Allen Library, Seattle Art Museums African galleries and UWs
Special Collections, Manuscripts and Archives.

Human Rights Task Force presents "Ruby Bridges" as part
of our monthly film and discussion series, Joining Worlds.
This
is an opportunity for our community share in a lively discussion
concerning groundbreaking documentary and fiction films. Joining
Worlds film series addresses racism and television, African-American
history, the theft and appropriation of Native American culture,
and other important topics relevant to this region.
The theme, Joining Worlds, allows us to explore the interconnections
among different forms of oppression, and recognize our places in
history.
