"JOINING WORLDS" FILM SERIES in October
October 23rd - Wednesday, 7pm
Fairhaven Public Library

"Ruby Bridges"

The true story of an African American girl who, in 1960 at age 6, helped to integrate all the white schools of New Orleans. Although she was the only black girl to come to the school she was sent to, and though she faced a crowd of angry white citizens everyday, she emerged unscathed, physically or emotionally.

SPEAKER: J.T. Stewart, educator at Seattle Community College and Fairhaven College, will be the speaker for this event. She is co-editor of Gathering Ground: New writing and Art for Northwest Woman of Color and the Ark. Her work has been featured on NPR, UW’s Allen Library, Seattle Art Museum’s African galleries and UW’s Special Collections, Manuscripts and Archives.

Whatcom Human Rights Task Force presents "Ruby Bridges" as part of our monthly film and discussion series, Joining Worlds.

This is an opportunity for our community share in a lively discussion concerning groundbreaking documentary and fiction films. Joining Worlds film series addresses racism and television, African-American history, the theft and appropriation of Native American culture, and other important topics relevant to this region.

The theme, Joining Worlds, allows us to explore the interconnections among different forms of oppression, and recognize our places in history.
